Mason jar lanterns are one of the most satisfying quick-win home decor projects you can make. In under an hour, a handful of simple jars becomes a glowing, atmospheric display that works equally well on a mantelpiece, a patio table, or as wedding or party centrepieces. This guide covers three different lantern styles — frosted glass, twine-wrapped, and painted — so you can pick the look that suits your home best. Materials You Will Need
- Mason jars or recycled glass jars in assorted sizes
- LED tea light candles (battery-operated — safer for enclosed jars)
- For frosted lanterns: frosted glass spray paint or white glass paint
- For twine lanterns: natural jute twine and a hot glue gun
- For painted lanterns: acrylic glass paints in your chosen colours
- Rubbing alcohol and a cloth (to clean jars before painting)
- Scissors, ribbon, or wire for hanging (optional)
Project Info
- Difficulty: Easy — suitable for all ages
- Time: 30–45 minutes (plus drying time for painted versions)
- Cost: $5–$12 for a set of three
Style 1: Frosted Glass Lantern
Clean your jar thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and allow to dry completely. In a well-ventilated area, apply two to three thin, even coats of frosted glass spray paint to the outside of the jar, allowing each coat to dry for 10–15 minutes before applying the next. The frosted finish diffuses the LED light beautifully, creating a soft, hazy glow. Once fully dry (usually 30 minutes), drop an LED tea light inside and replace the lid. For a decorative touch, tie a length of ribbon or raffia around the neck of the jar.
Style 2: Twine-Wrapped Lantern
Apply a thin bead of hot glue around the very base of the jar, then press the end of your jute twine firmly into it. Begin wrapping the twine tightly and evenly upward, applying small dabs of hot glue every 2–3 cm to keep each row anchored. Work your way up as much of the jar as you like — you can cover it entirely for a fully wrapped look, or stop halfway up to leave the glass visible above. For a hanging lantern, thread a length of wire or thick twine through the neck ring of the jar lid to create a handle. The natural texture of jute looks stunning with warm LED light glowing through the gaps between rows.
Style 3: Painted Geometric Lantern
Clean and dry the jar. Use low-tack masking tape to mark out geometric shapes on the outside — triangles, diamonds, or chevrons. Paint within the masked areas using acrylic glass paint; two coats give the best opacity. Remove the tape carefully while the paint is still slightly tacky (not fully wet and not bone dry) to get clean edges. Leave to cure for 24 hours before use. This style is particularly striking in a cluster of three jars with complementary colours — deep teal, burnt orange, and mustard yellow make a beautiful autumn palette.
Arranging and Displaying Your Lanterns
The magic of mason jar lanterns is in the grouping. Arrange three to five jars together at different heights — stack books or small wooden crates under a cloth to create levels, or hang several at varying heights from a branch or curtain rod using wire loops. Outdoors, line a path or steps with jars for evening ambiance; indoors, cluster them on a side table with a trailing ivy plant or a few dried flowers for a rustic-chic vignette. If you have made paper lanterns too, check out our guide on How to Make Paper Lanterns — the two styles work beautifully together as a layered display.
Safety Notes
Always use battery-operated LED tea lights inside glass jars. Real flame candles generate heat that can crack glass, especially if the jar is sealed or enclosed. LED lights are also completely safe around children and pets, produce no smoke, and last for hours on a single set of batteries. For outdoor use in summer, keep painted lanterns out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent the paint from peeling.
Making Them as Gifts
A set of three matching mason jar lanterns, presented in a small hessian bag or lined box, makes a wonderful handmade gift. Personalise by painting the recipient’s initial on the front, or fill the jar with fairy lights and add a gift tag.
