How to Create a Gallery Wall: Planning, Layout, and Hanging Tips

A gallery wall transforms a blank wall into a personalised display of art, photographs, and objects. Done well, it is one of the most impactful decorating changes you can make. Done poorly, it looks chaotic and random. This guide covers the full process from planning your layout on paper to the final nail in the wall, with professional tips to achieve a polished, intentional result.

What Is a Gallery Wall?

A gallery wall is a curated grouping of framed art, photographs, mirrors, shelves, and wall objects arranged as a unified display. The key word is curated: a gallery wall has a visual logic that ties the disparate elements together, even when the individual pieces are very different from each other.

Step 1: Choose Your Theme or Unifying Element

Before you buy a single frame, decide on the unifying principle of your gallery wall. Some options:

  • Colour: All frames in the same colour (black, white, or a specific tone), or all artwork in the same colour palette.
  • Subject: All botanical prints, all family photographs, all abstract art, all travel memories.
  • Frame style: All matching frames (creates a formal, cohesive look) or all different frames in the same finish.
  • Shape mix: Mixing square, rectangular, round, and irregular frames adds dynamism, but needs more careful layout planning.

Step 2: Gather Your Pieces

Collect everything you might include. Don’t limit yourself at this stage. Print photographs, pull out artwork, find the mirror you’ve been meaning to hang, consider a small shelf as part of the arrangement. Lay everything on the floor in front of the wall.

Step 3: Plan the Layout on Paper First

The single most important tip for a successful gallery wall is to plan before drilling. Here is the method used by professional interior stylists:

  1. Trace around each frame onto kraft paper or newspaper and cut out the shapes.
  2. Label each cutout on the front with the item name and the location of the hanging hook on the back.
  3. Use masking tape to stick the paper cutouts to the wall and move them around until you find an arrangement you love.
  4. Once you are happy, use a pencil to mark through the cutouts where each nail or hook will go.
  5. Remove the paper templates. The pencil dots remain as your drilling guides.

Gallery Wall Layout Principles

  • Start with the largest piece and build the arrangement around it.
  • Keep spacing consistent. 5 to 10cm between frames throughout the arrangement creates visual harmony. Wider spacing looks disconnected; tighter spacing looks messy.
  • Anchor to a focal point. Decide on a visual centre (often the largest piece) and build outward symmetrically or asymmetrically from there.
  • Consider the eye level. The visual centre of the gallery wall should sit roughly at eye level (about 145 to 155cm from the floor).
  • Use odd numbers. Arrangements of 3, 5, or 7 pieces feel more natural to the eye than even numbers.

Step 4: Hanging Your Gallery Wall

  1. Start hanging from the inside out or top to bottom, not randomly.
  2. Use a spirit level to check that individual pieces are hanging straight.
  3. For heavier frames, always drive the nail or screw into a wall stud or use appropriate wall anchors.
  4. For lightweight frames, adhesive hanging strips (like Command strips) are a damage-free option suitable for plasterboard walls.

Mixing Art Styles and Media

A gallery wall does not need to consist only of framed prints. Consider mixing in:

  • Woven wall hangings (see our macrame wall hanging tutorial)
  • Floating shelves with small objects
  • Circular mirrors
  • Three-dimensional wall art
  • Neon signs or LED word lights
  • Dried botanical arrangements in shadow boxes
